MEXICO REMOTELY

100 Top Companies for Remote Jobs in 2014

Which companies offer jobs with the most work-life balance options? We’ve analyzed our database of over 25,000 pre-screened and vetted companies with flexible work options to find the top companies for remote jobs and the results are in. These are some of the best companies to watch in 2014 as you continue to search for a remote job.

In 2013, these employers posted the highest number of remote jobs. Many of these companies are leaders in their fields—Xerox, UnitedHealth Group, Dell, ADP, American Express, and others—and their successes are highlighting the way current remote workforce technology can help their companies grow and thrive.
Otherwise known as telecommuting jobs or work-from-home jobs, these positions include a range of remote work such as exclusively working from home, partial telecommuting while working mostly from an office, and everything in between. With so many options to telecommute, it’s no wonder that 2014 is THE year to find remote jobs.
“Job seekers are looking for flexible jobs, but it can be really hard to find real opportunities with all the scams and bogus business opportunities out there. The companies in our database and on this list have all been screened and verified as legitimate, which helps job seekers stay safe and find flexible employment faster,” says Sara Sutton Fell, CEO of FlexJobs. “By breaking down the companies that offered the most opportunities, job seekers will know which companies to keep an eye on during their job search.”
The top industries offering flexible work arrangements include healthcare, information technology, education, nonprofit and philanthropy, and sales and marketing, according to the analysis. Job titles like Sales Representative, Senior Analyst, Nurse Case Manager, Account Executive, Web or Software Developer, Accountant, and Virtual Teacher are some of the most commonly found when searching for jobs that offer work-life balance.
“We are definitely noticing the trend of more companies that truly embrace flexibility,” shared Kelly Kirby, Director of Research. “And even though we’ve researched thousands of jobs, we are still surprised daily by some of the positions we come across.”

How to Work Remotely and Travel the World

We are in the emergence of a new age.
The age of the remote worker.
For the first time in history, our careers and income no longer need to be governed by our geographic location.
10 years ago, tools like Skype, FaceTime, Dropbox and Google Docs didn't exist.
10 years ago accessing e-mail via a cell phone was a revolutionary idea.
10 years ago many people still were using dial up!
HANGING OUT WITH AN IGUANA IN LAS ANIMAS, MEXICO
Today, these tools are second nature to us, yet so many of us fail to take advantage of this opportunity.
Instead of working 51 weeks out of the year for that one week of vacation, why not work remotely and turn your life into one huge adventure?
For the past seven months I have been working remotely in Mexico, Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand.
The goal of this post is to explain to you how I designed my life to work remotely, and to inspire you to do the same.
I do this through a very simple method.
  • Learn a skill
  • Get hired
  • Travel

Step 1) Learn a skill

Figure out a skill that you can do from your computer. Any skill that can be done without face to face contact.
Some examples include: Graphic Design, Web Design, Animation,  A/V Production, Copywriting,  Social Media, Bookkeeping, Virtual Assistant, Search Engine Optimization, Computer Programming, Consulting, etc.
If you don't have a skill already, learn one. There is an endless supply of affordable education online for any topic you can imagine.
For my journey, I decided to learn web development. I had some experience in web design in the past, although I knew I needed to learn more to do this professionally.
I hopped over to Lynda.com and took courses on HTML, CSS, Wordpress and a handful of other online tools. In a couple months, I was rocking out responsive sites like no ones business.
Lynda is an amazing resource. They have every piece of software and computer programming language on their site from Microsoft Word to the most advance 3D animation programs.
When I wanted to learn audio production, I used Lynda.
When I wanted to learn video production and animation, I used Lynda.
When I wanted to learn web development, I used Lynda.
I freaking love this site. It is about $25 per month, although you can sign up for a free 10 day trial if you want to test the waters first.

Step 2) Get Hired

Once you learn a skill, the next necessary step is to have someone pay you for that skill. Below I outline the steps  and tactics I used to start landing my first remote clients.

a) Create a case study

Once you learn your new skill, you need a portfolio piece. This is more important than a website or any amount of marketing you can do.
A high quality portfolio piece from a happy client is the most important element in making sales.
If you can't get someone to pay you, then do something for free. Find a friend or a colleague in need of your service, do it for them and do an amazing job.
After you finish the project, ask the client to write a testimonial for you.
Once they write their testimonial, put it into a nice document that you can send to prospective clients. Here is an example of a case study that I use to get clients for my web design business.
If you don't have Adobe InDesign or have the graphic design skills, then put something together in Microsoft Word. The most important thing is that you have a bold testimonial from that client praising your work, and a quality portfolio piece to show off.

b) Ask your existing network for referrals

Once you have learned this new skill, go out to your network and let them know what you have to offer. Send out your case study to your friends and colleagues. Show them what you have done and ask if they know anyone in need of a similar service.
You will be amazed at the random relationships or places that job referrals can come from.
At the start, don't be greedy. Take what you can get and keep building up your portfolio. Over time, the jobs will get bigger, your past clients will begin to refer you, and you will see your business grow.

c) Cold e-mail

This has been one of my most effective tactics in landing new remote working clients.
In September I e-mailed 120 prospects who had horrible websites. I sent them a case study to a past project and a nice e-mail letting them know I was available to help with their site if they needed it.
In total I spent about 10 hours sending out those e-mails, plus periodic follow ups over the next few months.
I ended up closing 4 clients from those cold e-mails that generated enough income to cover my cost of living in Mexico for two months.
Cold e-mailing works, and when your current network has nothing for you, this can be a great place to secure new clients.

4) List yourself as a contractor on outsourcing websites

Believe it or not, you can actually make great money as a contractor on sites like oDesk, Elance and Guru.com. Within just a few weeks of setting up my profile, I was making over $1000 in weekly income just from oDesk.
These sites are not just for people to outsource projects at low dollar amounts, there are quality clients on there looking to pay good money for freelancers who can communicate well and have the skills that they need.

3) Travel

Once you have landed your first few clients, you will feel the momentum.
Take the plunge, buy a one way ticket to somewhere awesome, and make the move.
If you are going to do it, I recommend starting somewhere cheap.
Right now I renting an apartment in Mexico for $330 US dollars per month. I can buy an avocado for 20 cents! (For anyone who knows how much I love avocados, that is awesome!)
When you are starting a business or freelance career, your biggest expense is going to be your own living. The cheaper the cost of living in a country, the lower your overhead.
ONE OF OUR MANY WEEKEND ADVENTURES MEXICO

Enjoy life now

Once you make the move and settle in. Keep e-mailing people, keep up with your old relationships, but most of all have a freaking awesome time.
I have been in Mexico for just over a month now and life is absolutely amazing.
I work during the days, while enjoying the beautiful view out my apartment window.
At night and on the weekends, I enjoy everything Mexico has to offer.
Making the move to work remotely has truly been a life changing experience.

What is stopping you?

There you have it, that is my high level guide on how to travel the world and work remotely.
My hopes are that this post has laid out the basic steps to building a career that will allow you to work remotely. I promise it is not as hard as you think and it is completely within reach.
If you want to travel the world, and work remotely then start working toward it today.

5 Companies that Hire Remote Workers Internationally

Five Companies Hiring Work at Home Workers- All Around the WorldWorking from home is easy in the United States. Remote jobs are quickly becoming recognized as a solid work-lifestyle. But it is not just Americanslooking for a way to work remotely- I receive emails from people living all over the world interested in finding a way to begin a work at home career. Their problem has been that most virtual markets are geared toward the United States. International work at home questions have been difficult for me to address. Honestly,  I’ve spent all of my time focusing on jobs in the US that I barely took notice or made long-lasting mental notes of companies that hire internationally. This post is my first step to begin recognizing global remote positions.

1. Lionbridge and Leapforce

These technology companies are working with top search engines to assist in making the web a better place. Both companies, Lionbridge and Leapforce, seek remote workers all over the world. The available positions and locations are changing on a regular basis- if you don’t see your company listed then check again next month. Additionally, Lionbridge offers translator and interpreter positions to multilingual freelancers.

2. Transcom

Virtual Call Center, Transcom , regularly hires incountries throughout North America, Asia and the Philippines. Additionally, there are positions listed that can be done from “Anywhere (Any Country/City)” from time to time. Transcom focuses on providing global customer care, sales, tech support and creditmanagement support to businesses by utilizing, in-part, remote workers.

3. TeleTech

TeleTech prides themselves on being a global company that offers services in as many as 30 different languages and with work centers in 17 countries. This is a company that has  remote hiring pool extending well beyond the United States, reaching countries like
  • Brazil
  • Canada
  • Costa Rica
  • Ghana
  • Ireland
  • Mexico
  • New Zealand
  • Philippines
  • Poland
  • United Kingdom
If interested in working from home for TeleTech- you can search their career page for current remote positions in your country.

4. Quicktate

Quicktate offers general transcription to people without experience. Workers receive audio files and must transcribe them into text. Quicktate is generally looking for people who speak a variety of languages. If you are able to create a PayPal account- then Quicktate may be of some help to you.

5. CCI

CCI, Call Center International, hires remote workers from all over the world. This virtual call center company hires agents to handle phone sales in a variety of languages. The needs by CCI vary so if you do not see an opening for your language skills- be sure to check back often.

Additionally, many people have found working as a freelance agent doing a variety of things based on your skill- has provided them the ability to work globally. Even if you are not able to use PayPal, companies like Elance make international work possible by using Elance Global Payments services. If you have a service you can offer online- I urge you to look into freelancing options. If you are not sure if you have any helpful skills- then browse around the available jobs on Elanceand see if it looks like anything you could do. You may be surprised how many skills could be taking advantage of to begin a freelancing career from home- no matter where you live in the world.
